At Zurich, corporate responsibility is an integral part of how we do business. Being a responsible company is fundamental to our long-term sustainability. We are committed to creating sustainable value for our shareholders, our customers, our employees and the communities in which we live and work. We focus on areas related to our core competencies so that we can apply our insurance and risk management expertise to enhance our contribution to society.
The foundation of our commitment to corporate responsibility is Zurich Basics, which sets out our values and our code of conduct. All employees take mandatory training on Zurich Basics annually. In 2011, this training included a module on our human rights commitments. The commitments made in Zurich Basics were reinforced when we became a signatory of the UN Global Compact. The UNGC enlists thousands of companies from over 100 countries to uphold ten principles related to labor, the environment, human rights and anti-corruption. All are closely aligned with values established in Zurich Basics.
