Dieter Wemmer

Dieter Wemmer (born 1957, German Citizen) is a member of the Group Executive Committee and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Zurich Financial Services Ltd (Zurich). He joined Zurich Re (Cologne) in 1986, at that time a German reinsurance subsidiary of Zurich’s German operation Agrippina, as pricing actuary for life reinsurance. He became Head of Life Reinsurance and Chief Actuary five years later. From 1992 until 1996, he held various positions with Agrippina, joining the management board in 1995, responsible for real estate, controlling, planning and communication. In 1996 he was transferred to the Corporate Center in Zurich as project manager for the implementation of International Accounting Standards (IAS) and US Generally Accepted Account-ing Principles (US GAAP). One year later, he became Head of Financial Controlling. From 1999 until May 2003, Mr. Wemmer was Head of Mergers and Acquisitions, with additional responsibility for capital management and General and Life Actuarial from 2002. He became Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Europe General Insurance business division in May 2003. In November 2004, he was appointed CEO Europe General Insurance and became a member of the Group Executive Committee. In March 2007 he assumed his current role as Chief Financial Officer.


Mr. Wemmer is a member of the boards of “economiesuisse” and the Zürich Art Society. In October 2009 he has been elected chairman of the European Insurance CFO Forum.


Mr. Wemmer holds a PhD and a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Cologne. From 1983 until 1986, Mr. Wemmer worked in pure mathematics at the universities of Cologne and Oxford.
