James J. Schiro is Chief Executive Officer of Zurich Financial Services (Zurich). He joined Zurich as Chief Operating Officer – Finance in March 2002 and at the same time became a Member of the Group Executive Committee. He subsequently was appointed Chief Executive Officer in May 2002. Under his leadership Zurich achieved a financial turnaround, pursuing a strategy of profitable growth based on a well diversified portfolio of Life and General Insurance businesses.

Prior to joining Zurich, Mr. Schiro made a distinguished career at PricewaterhouseCoopers where he started after graduating from St. John’s University in 1967. He held various management positions before becoming chairman and senior partner of the US firm in 1994. In 1998 he led the merger of Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand to form PricewaterhouseCoopers, the largest global professional services firm for which he subsequently served as global chief executive officer.

Mr. Schiro is active in a number of professional, international and civic organizations in Switzerland and the United States. These activities include: member of the board of directors of PepsiCo. and the supervisory board of Royal Philips Electronics. He is also chairman of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce, a member of the board of The Geneva Association, a member of the European Financial Services Round Table, and member of the Business Council of the World Economic Forum and since February 2008 a member of the board of directors of the Institute of International Finance (IIF). Additionally, he serves as vice-chairman of the American Friends of the Lucerne Festival and he is a member of the board of trustees of the Lucerne Festival. Furthermore, he is a member of the boards of trustees of St. John’s University, New York and the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, as well as various other boards.

James J. Schiro graduated from St. John’s University, New York, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration He holds an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree from the same university.
