Wendy May
Director of Corporate Communications, Zurich North America
What is your background?
- I was born one of seven children in Berkshire, England.
- I joined Zurich in the IT department as a secretary. There were only five PCs in the whole country at that point, and I had one of them. How times have changed.
- I changed direction and pursued a different career within the organisation and made it happen, moving sideways or upwards every few years and gaining experience as I went.
- Zurich sponsored my Postgraduate degree in Management at Portsmouth University in 1993. I took my exams while managing PR around the Zurich/BAFS merger.
- Earlier this year I had the opportunity to move from the UK to Chicago to head Corporate Communications, and I seized it. I'm very lucky to have the chance for adventure while staying with Zurich. In 22 years, I've come a long way.
Why did you choose Zurich?
I joined Zurich 22 years ago as a temporary secretary. I was excited to get a chance to work in the huge, prestigious offices in our city centre. We were an employer of choice even then. Luckily, I was offered a permanent job and was given opportunities to gain new experiences and skills. I found my niche in PR and internal communications, which I've been involved in at varying levels for around 15 years now.
Why have you stayed with Zurich?
I love this company - it might sound corny, but I do. We have a shared past and I hope a shared future. I am a passionate believer that this is my company - not just because I have a few shares, but because I feel I can make a difference to its success and reputation every day. Things have changed so much over the past 22 years, and I know there will be much change in the future. Life here is never dull!
If I were interviewing you…
…I'd look for energy, passion, positivity, excitement, curiosity, humility, kindness and a sense of ownership. If you have the determination to make a great career here, you can.
