Integrated Financial Market Supervisory Authority in Switzerland
Media Workshop held on June 17, 2003
What has already been established in countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom could soon become reality for Switzerland, too. The Swiss Federal Banking Commission (EBK) and the Federal Office of Private Insurance (FOPI) could be merged into one integrated financial market supervisory authority perhaps as early as 2006.
In light of the recent discussions and the decision making process, Zurich Financial Services held a workshop for journalists on June 17, 2003. Three guest experts illuminated the current status in their home countries. Whereas Graham Nicholson talked about the experience with the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in the United Kingdom, Dr. Hanno Goltz explained how the Federal Institute for Financial Services Supervision (BaFin) in Germany operates. Prof. Dr. Anton K. Schnyder, professor at the law school at the University of Zurich, provided some provocative ideas on the intended integrated financial market supervision in Switzerland against the background of the amendment of the insurance law. Furthermore, Dr. Monica Mächler-Erne, member of Zurich's Group Management Board and a member of both the Zufferey and Zimmerli panel of experts, briefly explained Zurich's position.
