Zurich Financial Services intends to merge Zurich Insurance Company and Alpina Insurance Company Ltd.

Zurich, November 17, 2003 – Zurich Financial Services Group is currently reviewing the strategy of its subsidiaries in Switzerland and it intends to merge Alpina Insurance Company Ltd. with Zurich Insurance Company. This step would be in line with the Group’s strategy to operate in all markets with a profitable and efficient organization. A final decision shall be taken by the end of the year. Both companies are wholly owned by Zurich Financial Services Group.

Alpina is an all-lines insurer that offers overall advice and solutions for individuals and companies. In addition, it is specialized in worldwide transport insurance. Represented in approximately 80 locations in all language regions in Switzerland as well as in Belgium, Israel, Lebanon, Liechtenstein and the Netherlands, Alpina employs about 820 people.

Zurich Switzerland comprises the Swiss operations of the Zurich Financial Services Group, an insurance-based financial services provider, serving some 1.6 million customers in its core businesses of non-life and life insurance and pension solutions and employing 6500 people. Zurich Switzerland operates in the market under the names Zurich, Zuritel, Zurich Invest, Alpina and Geneva. It is the second largest non-life insurer and the third largest life insurer in Switzerland.
