Merger of Alpina into Zurich

Zurich, December 18, 2003 - The boards of directors of Zurich Insurance Company (Zurich) and of Alpina Insurance Company Ltd. (Alpina) approved to merge Alpina into Zurich. The intention to merge was announced on November 17, 2003 and is in line with the Group's strategy to operate in all markets with a profitable and efficient organization. Both companies are wholly owned by Zurich Financial Services Group. With the merger all rights and obligations will automatically and unalteredly be taken over by Zurich. The merger is intended to be completed before June 30, 2004 with retroactive effect to January 1, 2004.

Zurich Switzerland comprises the Swiss operations of the Zurich Financial Services Group, an insurance-based financial services provider, serving some 1.6 million customers in its core businesses of non-life and life insurance and pension solutions and employing 6500 people. Zurich Switzerland operates in the market under the names Zurich, Zuritel, Zurich Invest, Alpina and Geneva. It is the second largest non-life insurer and the third largest life insurer in Switzerland.
