Sustainability and environmental management

We want to be known as one of the most responsible and impactful businesses in the world, and environmental management is a key part of Zurich’s overarching approach to sustainability. We strive to lead by example. This means applying good governance practices to ensure that our own behavior reinforces our ambition to be recognized as one of the world’s leading sustainable companies:

1.
We are transparent

We have identified material environmental indicators, and publicly disclose our environmental data.

2.
We are accountable

We set concrete environmental targets and report on our progress on an annual basis.

3.
We apply a continuous improvement approach

Our environmental management system is based on ISO 14001. This helps us to keep in line with evolving best practices.

Reducing emissions

We have been operating as a CO2 neutral business since 2014 and maintain this neutrality in our operations for un-avoided emissions through offsetting with resilience-enhancing carbon credits. We have decreased our own CO2 emissions per employee by 50% percent, eliminating over 150,000 tons of CO2e (equivalent of removing 32 000 passenger vehicles per year from the road) from our operations since 2007. We readily committed to a further 20% reduction against a new baseline year of 2015 which was achieved in 2018.

We are only accelerating actions to progress towards a low carbon economy amid an increasing climate crisis:

In June 2019, as the first insurance company, Zurich committed to set targets in the framework of the UN Global Compact Business Ambition Pledge that aims at limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

We have also committed to utilize 100% renewable power in all global operations by the end of 2022 and as such have formally joined the RE100, a global leadership initiative bringing together influential businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity. In addition, we are taking aggressive actions to eliminate single-use plastics and reduce internal paper usage by 80%, and want to ensure that the paper we continue to use as part of our daily operations comes from responsibly managed sources.
