Minimizing our environmental footprint

Environmental management is part of Zurich’s overarching approach to sustainability. We apply good governance practices to ensure that our own behavior reinforces our ambition to be recognized as one of the world’s leading sustainable companies:

  • We are transparent: We have identified material environmental indicators, and publically disclose our environmental data.
  • We are accountable: We set concrete environmental targets and report on our progress on an annual basis.
  • We apply a continuous improvement approach: Our environmental management system is based on ISO 14001. This helps us to keep in line with evolving best practices.

Targets

After reaching a 50 percent reduction in CO2e per employee, and 40 percent reduction in energy per employee in 2016 (compared against a 2007 baseline), Zurich readily committed to a further 20 percent reduction by 2025 against a new baseline year of 2015. We also set a new target on copy paper quality to ensure that the paper we use as part of our daily operations comes from responsibly managed sources.

Zurich is carbon neutral

Zurich became carbon neutral as of 2014 through its ambitious internal carbon emissions reduction efforts and by offsetting remaining emissions.
