Supporting initiatives to improve road safety

Each year, according to the World Health Organization, more than 1,250,000 people become victims of fatal traffic collisions. Between 20 and 50 million are injured or become disabled as a result of an incident on the road. Besides representing a humanitarian crisis, road crashes have a significant impact on society and the insurance sector. With more than a billion vehicles covered worldwide, insurers are directly involved in the issue of road traffic crashes.

Reducing the number of collisions is a matter of significant importance for insurers. The frequency and severity of claims affect insurers’ revenues.

Together with the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), AXA and Nestlé, Zurich co-authored the report ‘Insurance Guide on Road Safety.’ Read more.

In addition, over the last few years Zurich together with Nestle, have jointly organized three road safety conferences in Ghana in 2012, in Cameroon in 2014 and the third ‘Roads between us’ conference in Kuala Lumpur in 2016. This latest conference was also supported by the Global Road Safety Partnership, Aon and Zurich’s online driver safety partner eDriving Fleet. More than 70 participants attended from a broad range of private and public organizations. The conference comprised of a mix of interactive specialist panel discussions, technical sessions and regional case studies.

The event in Kuala Lumpur also boosted the number of signatories for the #SaveKidsLives campaign. More than 500 children every day are killed on the world's roads and #SaveKidsLives aims to halve this figure by 2020.
