Skills and experience
John Rafter has substantial financial and insurance industry experience. He began his career at Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. in 1987 and worked there in various roles until 2023 in both Europe and the U.S. He was named managing director in 1997 and partner in 2000. In these roles, his main responsibility was providing advice to financial institutions on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets transactions. Much of his work was focused on advising on transactions in the insurance sector in various regions around the world, but he also advised both banks and asset management companies. At Goldman Sachs, he served in leadership roles in the financial institutions group in the investment banking division and was a member of the group-wide commitments committee for many years. In addition, he was a board member of Rothesay Life Group, a UK regulated insurance group, from 2010 to 2013. Before retiring from Goldman Sachs in 2023, he resigned from his partner role in 2020 and served as a senior adviser within the investment banking division from 2020 to 2023. He became a member of the boards of Zurich Insurance Group Ltd and Zurich Insurance Company Ltd in April 2024.
