The insurance industry is changing in some exciting ways, and so are we. Our customers have different needs and expectations based on their experiences with other changing sectors. Our competitors are taking on new shapes, and our role as risk experts is being expanded by the digital revolution which is rewriting the rulebook for many elements of our business.


To get prepared for these very different needs and expectations, we need to forge ahead with our strategy that is rooted in customer focus, simplification and innovation. But we also need to go deeper. If we are going to have clarity on what we offer to our customers in a digital age, we need to have clarity on why we are relevant to them and how we deliver that relevance.

Our purpose and values statements are a new and simplified approach to articulating why we are relevant and how we deliver that relevance, no matter where these transformational forces take us. These statements align with our customer-focused strategy, and provide a “north star” to understanding how we can thrive in this era of change.

Though simple, these three statements go beyond what it is we do for our customers and embrace the more fundamental impact we have on people’s lives. They capture the core essence of what we provide, enabling people, business and communities to face a world of risk with confidence. When looking at how we deliver against our purpose we focus on three core values:

Everything we do is guided by this clear set of values. These are further expressed in our strategy and our Code of Conduct. Put simply, our priorities are to act with the highest standards of integrity, while putting our customers at the heart of all we do. And it means we emphasize cohesion; serving every commercial and retail customer in a personal, effective and uniquely Zurich way.

We’re currently in the process of reshaping the firm to be fit for purpose in a rapidly-changing world. We’re investing significantly in technology, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing our supporting capabilities. This includes investing in our people, strengthening our relationships, promoting our global brand and enhancing our propositions and capabilities within the commercial and retail markets, and making sure everyone is on board with our values and culture. Commercially, we’re prioritizing investments in distinctive positions in the corporate market and select retail markets.

  • Our role as an insurer: managing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues in our insurance transactions and providing solutions with a sustainable impact.
  • Our role as an investor: investing in our assets in a sustainable way through ESG integration and impact investments.
  • Our role in society: encouraging the transition to a low-carbon economy through our climate change position, reducing our own environmental footprint, ensuring diversity and inclusion, investing in our communities and improve the resilience to floods worldwide.

We are signatories of the United Nations Global Compact and a number of other external sustainability principles and commitments including actively supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals. To monitor our progress and improve our sustainability performance, we use stakeholder feedback provided through customer and employee surveys, as well as ratings and indices such as CDP, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) and the MSCI ESG rating.
