Learning and insurance

We have strong ties with educational institutions in China, Europe and the U.S. These alliances allow us to fund research on issues such as risk and natural catastrophes. We also promote insurance as a subject for academic study.

Education in the U.S.

Our educational activities in the U.S. include alliances with the Chair of Enterprise Risk Management at St. John’s University, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where we fund and support research on terrorism and natural catastrophes, the RAND Institute for Civil Justice, where we fund research on civil justice issues (e.g. asbestos, terrorism), and the Bren School at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where we contribute to the Distinguished Visitors Program.

This program allows the Bren School to attract international leaders in environmental policy, law, business, and science to enrich and expand the intellectual life of the school community and share insight on issues critical to climate change.

Insurance research in Europe

We also partner with a number of academic institutions in Europe. For example, in Spain we sponsor the Chair of Insurance at the University of Barcelona and we support the Goethe University of Frankfurt in Germany.

The Swiss institutions we support include the University of Zurich, the University of St. Gallen and the ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich). The Chair of Risk and Insurance Economics at the Department of Management, Technology and Economics of ETH Zurich was established with our funding in November 2011.

The group conducts research into health economics, risk and insurance using methods developed in game theory and contract theory. At the University of Zurich, we helped to establish the Zurich Center for Insurance and Finance in 2014 to support research and education in both finance and insurance.

Alliances in China

We have been supporting The Research Center for Insurance and Risk Management at the School of Economics and Management, and the Chair of Risk Mathematics at Tsinghua University, for several years.

The Zurich Research and Development Centre of Shipping and Finance in Shanghai, China, has been in operation since March 2010. It contributes to the growth and development of Shanghai as an international finance center and global shipping hub. At the same time, it benefits Zurich customers through its focus on studying and forecasting new developments and trends in the fields of global shipping and finance.
