Green adventures: How to travel sustainably

Find out how making small changes can make travel more sustainable without compromising on the experience.
Travel is one of life’s great pleasures. It broadens our horizons, connects us with different cultures and opens our eyes to new places and people. But with the travel and tourism industry contributing to 6.5 percent of global greenhouse emissions, responsible travel has never been more important. Fortunately, there are lots of simple ways to reduce your environmental impact.
“Traveling more sustainably isn’t about sacrificing the joy of travel,” says Katherine Shill, Sustainability Lead at global travel insurance business Zurich Cover-More. “It’s about making smarter choices. From the transport we take to the accommodation we book, every responsible and sustainable decision can make a difference.”
Here are eight tips to help you travel more sustainably so you can explore the world while still preserving it for future generations.
1. Choose low-carbon transport
Getting to and from your destination can account for more than 70 percent of a trip’s total carbon emissions. This means that the most effective way to reduce your footprint is to rethink how you travel. Trains and buses are among the most environmentally-friendly long-distance options. A train from London to Paris, for instance, emits up to 97 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) than a flight. Once you’ve reached your destination, choose public transport, electric vehicles and bicycles – and consider walking whenever you can. Staying longer in one place instead of rushing between destinations not only lowers emissions but can also lead to a deeper connection with the place you are visiting.
2. Fly smarter
If flying is unavoidable, opt for direct routes. Not only do they get you there faster, but they also reduce the number of takeoffs and landings – which can contribute around 25 percent of a flight’s total emissions. Choose airlines with modern aircraft and fuel-efficient fleets. And fly economy. As well as saving you money, economy seats take up less space and weight, resulting in lower emissions per passenger.
3. Pack light
Every extra kilo requires more fuel. So whether you’re flying, driving or taking the train, heavy luggage means higher emissions. Use lightweight, long-lasting suitcases and pack versatile clothing you can mix and match. The less you carry, the smaller your carbon footprint.
4. Stay in sustainable accommodations
Look for hotels certified by groups such as the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), or those with eco-friendly initiatives – such as renewable energy use, water conservation and food waste reduction. Some hotels even offset their emissions through verified sustainability projects.
5. Reduce waste
After choosing a green hotel, keep up your eco-friendly habits by doing the following:
- Turning off lights, TVs and climate controls when you leave the room.
- Reusing towels and bed linen.
- Turning off unused appliances such as mini fridges.
- Using the “Do Not Disturb” sign to reduce housekeeping.
- Bringing your own reusable bottles, containers and shopping bags, and recycling whenever you can – even if it means holding on to your rubbish until you find a suitable recycling bin.
6. Eat and shop locally
Support the local economy while reducing emissions by eating locally sourced food and buying handmade souvenirs. This reduces the emissions created by packing, refrigerating and transporting goods long distances. Steer clear of buffets, which are notorious for food waste, and prioritize quality over quantity when eating and shopping.
7. Choose eco-friendly tour operators and travel activities
While exploring your destination, choose tours and travel activities that are committed to sustainability and conservation. Look for operators that partner with conservation groups, support community development and minimize their environmental impact. Avoid attractions featuring captive animals or that damage natural habitats. And consider eco-volunteering and other opportunities to make a positive contribution to the destinations you’re exploring.
8. Offset the emissions you can’t avoid
Even with the best intentions, some emissions are inevitable. Offset them by supporting reputable climate initiatives, such as reforestation and renewable energy projects. Various free online tools, such as the one provided by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), can help you to calculate and mitigate your travel emissions.
