Zurich data commitment

The acceleration of digitalization and adoption of new technology have created new opportunities and new challenges. Zurich aims to be a leader in responsible handling of data and supports ethical use of technology.

Data is at the heart of a profound transformation in insurance. Customers increasingly expect simple products and services that add value to their lives, can be accessed through their mobile devices and are bundled together with products from other industries. Zurich Insurance Group (Zurich) uses data to meet these new expectations of customers and develop insurance for modern living. But with access to customer data comes responsibility to be transparent about how data is used and digital identities protected.

Zurich’s industry-leading data commitment

Zurich’s global data commitment, which was announced in September 2019, aims to inspire confidence in a digital society. This commitment includes the promise never to sell customers’ personal data nor to share their personal data without being fully transparent. This means customers will always be informed if their personal data is shared, and with whom. Third parties with whom Zurich does share personal data are bound by enforceable contracts, which set out how that personal data can be used.

Zurich also pledges to use data to do what is best for customers. That means, for example, using insights from data to provide innovative services that help to prevent incidents and reduce risk. In this way, Zurich can provide both traditional products for risk transfer as well as risk avoidance. Such services can be used for home protection, to improve health and well-being.

"We have been serving our customers for 150 years but the way we use this data is changing rapidly. Data insights are helping us to create products that anticipate customers’ needs, while new technology ensures we’re offering these services to customers in the right place and at the right time.
With these new opportunities comes a great responsibility to keep customer data secure and use it in an ethical, transparent manner. “

The four promises made to our customers in Zurich's data pledge are to:

  • Keep their data safe;
  • Never sell their personal data;
  • Not share their personal data without being transparent about it;
  • Put their data to work so Zurich can better protect them, and so they can get the most out of life.
